Villa Mahapala Sanur Bali consists of 20 uniquely themed pool villas and all of them are designed in various different ways and the ambiance is characterized by the mystic zodiac signs. An artist retreat that had been popular on the western world through a wonderful book “A House In Bali” of an American musicologist Collin Mc Phee. In 1980 Made Wijaya a Balinese lanscaper acquired the Collin Mc Phee with only the foundations remained. The view however was still magnificent and unspoilt. He slowly set to build a series of cottages approximating the scale and layout of the original pavillions. The ridge had, through decades retained the stamp of “Artist’s Retreat”;various painters, writers, dancers and shollars from all over the world – Anthropologist Margareth Mead, painter Ian van Wieringen, French historian-dancer Agnes Montenay, to name but few.
This villa lies on the edge of the ridge above the magnificent Ayung River Valley in Ubud Sayan that easy to reach in 45 minutes from Ngurah Rai Bali International Airport passing through the traditional villages.
Valley East Villa & Valley West Villa
The two villas are a mix between the Queenslander and the Malay house styles, with broad wrap around the verandah, spacious garden, bathroom and colonial Dutch interiors. Items from Wijaya’s personal arts collections and various historical paints are on display in this villas which are the most spacious and private in compound.
Made Villa
Villa Made was write-landscaper Made Wijaya’s original Sayan home, designed by Wijaya in the mountain style which he calls Bali Baronial. The thatched, split level villa has a full bathroom on each floor and small kitchenette. It is the most dramatically sited mountain view villas in Bali. The architecture style is rustic – sliding Japanese style screen walls and dark Jaka Palm floors worth coconut wood columns but the interior are contemporary and comfortable. There is small swimming pool ajacent to this villa and a Balinese kitchen on n upper terrace where dinner can be served, under the start, Sayan style. Villa Made has for ten years been the summer retreat of photographer Tim Street Porter and his writer artist wife Annie Kelly.
Royal Villa
This Villa was built on the site of musicologist Collin Mc Phee’s original 1950s Bali Home, as featured in his book “A House in Bali” Built in the Balinese Majapahit (Red Brick) style the villa overlooks the hotel northern swimming pool ad the Ayung River Valley beyond. This villa features a very private bathroom garden with valley view.
Presidential Suite
In 1995 Made Wijaya wanted a new house to showcase the view and was keen to flex some architectural muscle on a neighbouring site. With his partners Gusti Sarjana and Nyoman Miyoga a Presidential Suite was conceived in a style that could be called ‘power dressing’. This is a substantial house that would be a new direction of traditional Balinese architecture. The land’s three gentle terraces were turned into a dramatic two with a long shaped lap pool taking up most of the lower terrace. Three traditional structures were then built on the sizeble upper terrace
Bali Aga Suite
This spacious suite located near the new lap pool and outdoor Bali Aga museum of architecture are the newest and the most luxury of Taman Bebek accommodation. Set in a former coconut plantation the villa have both valley and garden view and are conveniently situated near the hotel’s lap pool, lobby and dinning terrace

This is a great small hotel in the fashionable Seminyak area. It has a lovely pool with well appointed rooms. The breakfast was excellent. While I didn’t stay in a Villa I did inspect a one bedroom which was very nice. The hotel is around 500m from the beach so may not suit those who like the surf. The hotel also has bicycles which quests can use for a couple of hours free. Overall I would recommend this hotel and stay here again.
